Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red

Grandad Gravenor

Tower of London 2014

Commemorating 100 years since the 1st day of British involvement in The Great War.  Each of the 888, 246 ceramic poppies at the Tower of London represents a British & Commonwealth fatality during the war.

In Memoriam

C.S.M G.A Gravenor. DCM, Croix de Guerre avec Palmes
For conspicuous gallantry on May 5, 1915, 2nd Battle of Ypres

"When sent up with a half company to reinforce another regiment, he came under heavy fire which killed and wounded several of his party, he himself being wounded.  The Company began to fall back, but he limped after his men, rallied them, and although wounded in the leg, led them to the advanced trench where he remained in command of it until he was carried back to the dressing station"
14th January 1916
